Who We Are

Access Philanthropy is a philanthropy research, marketing and development consulting firm that works with local and national nonprofit organizations to improve their fundraising and marketing methods and results. Recent clients include Ordway Theatre, Arlington House, Kansas City Nonprofit Connect, Black Data Processors, University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment, Minnesota Education Equity Partnership, LifeWorks, MicroGrants, Fairmont Opera House and many other large and small organizations.

In addition to one-on-one support for clients, Access Philanthropy maintains an online database of 3,000+ profiles of local and national funders available in segmented lists (such as Girl Funders, Domestic Abuse Services Funders, American Indian Funders, Minnesota Small Family Funders, Rural Arts & Culture Funders).

Qualities and Qualifications

We are looking for a creative, self-directed, determined, detail-focused person with good analysis, writing, and internet skills. Collaboration, eagerness to learn, and capacity to strategize are also critical.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Working knowledge of nonprofit fundraising.

Experience in prospect research, and database research.

Knowledge of the range of resources available to prospect researchers and the ability to apply those resources in an organized and purposeful manner.

Analytical skills to initiate and perform analyses and organize information to identify philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations and foundations.

Ability to analyze and interpret financial disclosure documents for the purposes of quantifying foundation assets and wealth assessments (990PF, SEC filings, real property files, financial and legal disclosures, etc.).

Strong computer skills and demonstrated background in Internet-based research, including experience working with the Microsoft Office suite of products.

Ability to download and export information between systems.

Experience with Google drive.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work, and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.

Ability to recall, recognize and communicate interrelated information pertaining to client prospects and general grantmaking trends.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information

General Tasks

We are looking for a researcher who can support our clients’ individual prospecting needs (such as funding for tennis equipment and housing for formerly incarcerated men), as well as support our database building work (such as finding institutions that fund in Edina and Eden Prairie or fund programs for girls of color).

Research and Analysis

Using information from Access Philanthropy’s funder databases, other online databases, and other resources (other organizations’ funder lists, state and federal resource lists) find:

Funders and donors who are exactly or nearly focused on specific fields of interest with given parameters (geography, recipient size, political leanings)

Selected donors’ and funders’ relevant grantmaking history, priorities, procedures and application procedures

Possible relationships between funders and donors and clients

Details about funders’ contacts, program officers, finances, past grants, personal background, business background (when appropriate), tips for engagement

Writing

The researcher must be able to write up analysis and information in simple, clean, concise language that provides clients and database subscribers with sufficient information to determine whether they wish to pursue a relationship with the prospect.

Collaboration and Strategies

Researcher must have the ability and interest to work with Access Philanthropy staff and clients to analyze information, prioritize choices, and set strategies for connecting with prospective funders and donors.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:
Develop and maintain written reports, biographical profiles, providing basic analysis of program trends, and short- and long-range results.

Compose documents (profiles, biographies, project summaries) using style, grammar and content appropriate to specific audiences.

Extract and communicate key information that directs cultivation and solicitation strategies

Maintain active awareness of the important news and events related to philanthropy.

Use creative research techniques to provide research on individuals, friends, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational and financial sources, including online databases, Internet websites, library and government sources and other external repositories of public information to identify prospects.

Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity and linkages to the clients.

Evaluate research results to develop and implement further research strategies utilizing intelligence-gathering techniques of the information profession.

Identify donor gift capacity through the analysis and clarification of complex information.

Work Details

20-25 hours per week $20.00/hour

Most work time is spent at Access Philanthropy office near Nicollet and Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis
