Jon Pratt
Executive Director, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits
Jon Pratt has worked in nonprofit organizations as attorney/lobbyist for an environmental organization (Minnesota Public Interest Research Group), regional director for an alternative foundation (the Youth Project), and as director for a coalition formed by nonprofits to reform corporate and foundation philanthropy (the Philanthropy Project). In 1982 he was campaign manager for a candidate for Minnesota State Auditor, Paul Wellstone.
In 1987 he became director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, an association of 2000 organizations that sponsors research, training, lobbying and negotiated discounts to strengthen Minnesota’s nonprofit sector.
Jon has consulted with nongovernmental organizations on the development of NGO associations and services in Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia and Turkey. Pratt has a law degree from Antioch School of Law, Washington, D.C., and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University.
He serves as a contributing editor for the Nonprofit Quarterly (based in Boston), a trustee for the Unemployment Services Trust (based in Santa Barbara), and as a member of the Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange Small Employer Workgroup.
Sarah R. Caruso
President and Chief Executive Officer, Greater Twin Cities United Way
Sarah R. Caruso has more than 30 years of combined business and non-profit leadership experience. Ms. Caruso joined Greater Twin Cities United Way as President and Chief Executive Officer in November of 2009. Greater Twin Cities United Way is the second largest among 1,200 local chapters in a worldwide network. Raising and investing over $90 million annually, the organization supports 338 Twin Cities programs at more than 180 nonprofits. United Way seeks to build community strength through supporting education, job training, health and safety net programs for the most vulnerable.
Prior to joining Greater Twin Cities United Way in December 2009, Ms. Caruso served as president of the Minnesota Children’s Museum. During her six-year tenure, she oversaw the completion of a $10 million campaign; the development of a national children’s museum exhibit tour business – which reached 2 million children and families – and the Museum’s partnerships with early learning organizations around the state more than doubled.
Ms. Caruso has extensive business experience. At General Mills, her responsibilities included managing large established brands such as Cheerios and Wheaties, as well as new business efforts in both retail and foodservice channels. She has received national industry awards and citations for marketing excellence. Ms. Caruso had the distinction of being named one of the Minneapolis – St. Paul Business Journal’s 2013 Outstanding Women in Business. The publication features the achievements, contributions and leadership of more than 50 influential Twin Cities women.
Appointed in 2005 by former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, she served as chair of the State Advisory Council on Early Childhood Education and Care, which advised the Governor and the legislature on policies and practices that seek to improve kindergarten readiness. Ms. Caruso has served on several non-profit boards including ARC Greater Twin Cities, Children’s Theater Company, Minnesota State Arts and PACER Center.
Ms. Caruso has a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Arts with high honors in economics from Smith College.
