Education Session: “Leader Is Not A Title”

Presented by Don Taylor, co-lead for the nonprofit business unit at Chandler Group, a retained executive search firm.

In this highly participative session, participants will further examine data-based industry trend information identified by Penelope Burk’s “Donor-Centered Leadership” and the research of Cygnus Applied Research, Inc. We will examine the implications for the competencies that will be required in both management and leadership.  Participants will also gain insight into the top talent gaps being seen while doing executive search in the sector—related to both leadership and management skills required.  Finally, the group will build a list of practices that can contribute to the on-going professional development of practitioners at all levels in the profession.

In the next 10 years—the nonprofit sector (among most others) will experience a mass exodus of intellectual and social capital from the sector as baby boomers move into retirement.  Additionally, proven practices in the science of fund development are changing rapidly to respond to changes in donor behavior.  Will the sector be ready? And what are nonprofits doing to prepare? What are fund development practitioners doing to prepare?
