Free Forest School is seeking a half-time Development & Communications Director to head our ongoing fundraising and marketing needs. Reporting to the Executive Director, you must have an established background in implementing nonprofit donation and marketing strategies, enthusiasm for our mission, and a willingness to take on new challenges.

In this role, you will organize fundraising initiatives, work with board members, and build relationships with donors, staff and volunteers. You will oversee the implementation of a cohesive marketing strategy with a team of volunteers.

To qualify, you will have a bachelor’s degree and three years of fund development experience, preferably in the education and nonprofit fields. You should also be familiar with Salesforce, Constant Contact, Google Drive, WordPress, and Excel to use in your daily job duties.

This 20-hour/week position is paid hourly, offers PTO, and has the potential to expand beyond 20 hours per week as the budget grows. This position is primarily a work-from-home position, but you must be based in the Twin Cities and available to meet in person weekly.

Description of Tasks

Development – Long range & everyday tasks:

  • Create development annual goals, strategies and calendars in collaboration with ED;

  • Implement and evaluate fundraising campaigns and activities;

  • Identify and steward prospective donors;

  • Oversee the Development Committee, provide training as needed;

  • Stay on top of fundraising trends and the nonprofit community.

  • Communicate with donors and staff via email, phone or social media;

  • Answer donor and staff inquiries in a timely fashion;

  • Design and publish solicitation materials.

Communications – Long range & everyday tasks:

  • Create marketing annual goals, strategies and calendars in collaboration with ED;

  • Implement and evaluate marketing campaigns and activities, communicating FFS’s brand and initiatives efficiently and accurately via many channels (website including the blog, printed materials, social media, etc.);

  • Work in partnership with third-party web manager to ensure website functions properly;

  • Oversee systems and volunteers to update website content.

  • Design and publish basic marketing pieces;

  • Provide training to FFS staff and volunteers to ensure consistent and effective brand communication via social media, website, video production, print materials, and verbal communication;

  • Coordinate communications for development efforts and special events;

  • Create, format, and distribute quarterly newsletter.



We are seeking applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of nonprofit development experience and the following qualities:

  • Superb written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

  • Time management and flexibility with job duties.

  • Fundraising and marketing software experience (Salesforce, Constant Contact, Google Drive, WordPress, and Excel).

  • Creative, self-starter attitude who likes to learn.

  • Organized and inspiring leader.
