Urban Boatbuilders is a youth development organization and our mission is “to empower youth to succeed work and life through woodworking and experiential learning.” We serve hundreds of youth each year. Through our Partnership Program and Apprenticeship Program, youth develop technical woodworking skills, social and emotional learning skills and a connection to their local waterways.

About the Position
The development and communications associate is responsible for executing a wide range of administrative, fundraising, events, and communications functions in the development and communications department and works to support the development team and Executive Director. The associate maintains the foundation of the department from which the team executes its critical fundraising activities. They must have interest in development as a profession and, most importantly, a willingness to learn. The development and communications associate will be working in a collaborative work environment as part of a four person team and will have great exposure to all aspects of fund development and communications. The associate must be committed to the goals of the organization and be able to articulate those goals and Urban Boatbuilders’ mission.

Primary Responsibilities
Provide support to development staff related to all fundraising and communications strategy, including the implementation of individual fundraising efforts, outreach and fundraising event planning, print and electronic communications, corporate sponsorships, and boat/paddle making marketing.

Communications – 40%
– Manage organization’s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.
– Develop monthly e-newsletters for constituents.
– Update and manage organization website.
– Design marketing materials for programs, boat sales, and paddle making classes.
– Work directly with the Communications Committee to ensure annual goals are identified and attained.

Fundraising – 40%
– Assisting with prospecting, proofreading, and writing grants to foundations and corporations.
– Assisting in stewardship activities and general correspondence with individual donors and foundations.
– Maintaining the fundraising database to ensure donation information is updated and accurate.
– Calling and informing donors of upcoming organizational activities, setting up meetings, and inviting in for shop tours.

Event Coordination – 20%
– Plan, assist, and execute outreach and fundraising events.
– Design and produce event invitations, guest lists, event signage, and name badges.
– Assist in volunteer recruitment and coordination for events.
– Support the efforts of the development manager and executive director to identify and secure event sponsors.
Perform sponsorship outreach to secure event funding.

Skills and Abilities
– An understanding of community organizing and working with peoples from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
– Strong organizational and project management skills.
– Experience with graphic design and print collateral helpful.
Attention to detail as it pertains to design work.
– Interest in learning about fundraising for nonprofit organizations
– Excellent communication, writing, and problem-solving skills.
– Proficient typing and computer skills.
– Computer proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
– Ability to work on special projects while completing on-going work; ability to manage multiple tasks.
– Familiarity with, or willingness to learn Salesforce, Squarespace, MailChimp, and Adobe Suite.

Professional Background
– One year of nonprofit experience, either in a paid staff or volunteer role
– Related work or volunteer experience.
– Education and/or prior experience in graphic design/nonprofit administration/fundraising preferred.
– Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Reports To
This position reports to the Development Manager and Executive Director.

Compensation
Salary for this position is $33,000 – $35,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications. Competitive benefits package. Paid holidays and vacation. Flexible schedule.
