Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity is fighting housing injustice by aggressively addressing our region’s deplorable homeownership gap between Black and white households—one of the worst in the nation. Their Advancing Black Homeownership (ABH) initiative, born out of conversations with Black clients and community members, leverages a special purpose credit program to accelerate access to affordable mortgages for Black families who have faced historic barriers to homeownership due to redlining, racial covenants, and disinvestment.
This program is the first of its kind in the Twin Cities and features financial coaching to address financial trauma while developing financial resilience, a below-market-rate mortgage that offers more equitable terms to qualified applicants, and up to $50,000 in additional down payment assistance for greater purchasing power. In partnership with Habitat, Black households can choose a home that best suits their needs and begin building wealth for their families and future generations. When families have an affordable home of their own, they can truly thrive.
