Senior Development Officer – Principal Gifts

The University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) is a key partner with the University in building and sustaining excellence among students and faculty, and fueling discovery in important areas on all University of Minnesota campuses.

The University of Minnesota Foundation seeks a dynamic, experienced senior development officer to focus on Principal Gift level donor identification and qualification. Reporting to the Senior Director of Principal Gifts responsibilities include front line fundraising and portfolio building work to build and enhance our principal gift level donor pipeline. This will be done through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of leadership and principal gifts from various sources including alumni, individuals, and family foundations.

Principal Gifts Portfolio Development
•    Build and maintain a portfolio of prospects with the capacity to give $5 million or greater. Build effective relationships and cultivation strategies to deeply engage donors in the University’s mission and priorities with a goal of securing support at $5 million+ gifts.
•    Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation and stewardship.
•    Lead proactive collaborative efforts to develop effective and coordinated strategies for prospects shared by more than one academic unit. Collaborate with development officer partners to the identification and refinement of compelling gift opportunities to connect principal gift donors’ interests with the University’s priorities.
•    Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fund raising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics.
•    Initiates and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific principal gift fundraising initiatives.
•    Ensure annual requests for financial support are presented to all donors and prospects at the appropriate time and that all requests are closed on schedule and acknowledged in a timely fashion.
•    As needed to advance the donor strategy, create and execute events and activities for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitations to advance principal gifts.
•    Position is expected to meet pre-determined goals and objectives established annually with the Senior Director, Principal Gifts.

Organizational Collaboration
•    Proven ability to work with senior development, organization and university leaders to build confidence and foster collaboration when working on principal gift donor prospects.
•    Work with Senior Director of Principal Gifts, and Prospect development team to develop a strategy and build a pipeline for new six and seven-figure prospects from outside of the organization’s existing donor pool.
•    Drive development of new stewardship strategies and help to create a more unified stewardship experience for principal gift donors.
•    Achieve annual revenue goals and assist in meeting departmental goals.
•    Recommend appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies and timing for donor/prospect visits with University of Minnesota Foundation development leadership, debrief and manage follow up activity.
•    Works with UMF prospect development team to continue to identify new potential principal gift prospects for future gift opportunities.
•    Participates in special projects, as assigned and handles other duties and assignments as required.

This position will require occasional travel, working on evenings, and weekends for Foundation events and activities.

Required Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s degree and five years of demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses.
•    Demonstrated experience in recruiting, training and managing successful activities of volunteers in major gift work.
•    Ability to analyze situations and develop plans, and to initiate and implement programs.
•    Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
•    Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting as a leader, participant and facilitator.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
•    Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to a wide array of audiences.
•    Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and database familiarity.

Preferred Qualifications
•    Seven or more years of experience in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and principal gifts.
•    Development experience with capital campaign experience in a large academic or health-related institution.
•    Commitment to and enthusiasm for fund raising in higher education and/or experience working within the environment of a large, public institution or organization.
