About the IDEA Breakfast Series

AFP Minnesota’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) Breakfast Series invites nonprofit executives of color to share stories of leadership, fundraising, and how they navigate the sector as a person of color. The series is part of AFP-MN’s goal to make the fundraising profession more inclusive with greater representation in the sector at all levels of leadership.

The IDEA Series is specifically designed to benefit current and aspiring fundraisers of color; however the series is open to everyone interested in participating and learning from this conversation.

About the Event

In complex times many nonprofit organizations are wrestling with diversifying their thinking and efforts to recruit and retain top talent. Come join AFP Minnesota to hear from a diverse panel of professional fundraisers from The Minneapolis Foundation as they share observations, learnings and how they might suggest the sector begin to behave differently to make this profession more inclusive.

Presenter

Chanda Smith Baker, Senior Vice President, Community Impact, The Minneapolis Foundation

Chanda Smith Baker joined The Minneapolis Foundation in 2017 as a results-driven leader with 25 years of nonprofit and community experience. She oversees the Foundation’s Community Impact team and its competitive grantmaking program, which distributes $5 million to $7 million every year to transform education, foster economic vitality, and promote civic engagement in greater Minneapolis-St. Paul. In addition, she provides strategic direction and leadership to the Foundation’s community initiatives and partners with its donors, as well as organizations and leaders across the city and state, to increase their alignment and collective impact. Before joining the Foundation, Chanda spent 17 years at Pillsbury United Communities, where she served in a variety of positions before assuming the role of President and CEO in 2011.

Russell Betts, Philanthropic Advisor
Russell Betts joined The Minneapolis Foundation in 2016 as a Philanthropic Advisor with more than 20 years of experience in fundraising and alumni relations at major research universities. At the Foundation, he focuses on serving the charitable needs of corporate executives, their families, and the companies they lead. Betts comes to the Foundation from the University of Minnesota Foundation, where he served from 2013 to 2016 as a development officer for the university’s Department of Medicine. Prior to that, Betts spent a decade at the University of Wisconsin Foundation, where he served as Director of Development covering the Southern United States, then Athletics, and eventually the Law School. He began his career as the Director of Diversity and Assistant Field Representative for the Wisconsin Alumni Association. He holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jenny Johnson, Philanthropic Advisor

Jenny Johnson joined The Minneapolis Foundation in 2015. She brings more than 13 years of fund development and outreach experience in varied nonprofit settings, including a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Chicago, Children’s Home Society of Minnesota, and Cornerstone Advocacy Service. Prior to joining The Minneapolis Foundation, Jenny served as Vice President of Resource Development at Aeon, an affordable housing nonprofit. She holds a B.A. in sociology from North Park University in Chicago.

Jo-Anne Stately, Director of Impact Strategy, Economic Vitality

Jo-Anne E. Stately joined the Foundation in 2009 and has over twenty years of experience in philanthropy. Prior to joining The Minneapolis Foundation, she served as Vice President of Development at the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and was a Senior Program Officer at The Saint Paul Foundation. In Jo-Anne’s current role as Director of Strategic Impact for Economic Vitality, she manages a portfolio of investments to develop the Twin Cities’ workforce, nurture minority-owned businesses, and build community wealth. An enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and a citizen of the White Earth Nation, Jo-Anne serves on the boards of, nationally, Native Americans in Philanthropy and, locally, the Native American Community Clinic. Co-chair of the Northside Funders Group, Jo-Anne also serves on the Minneapolis St. Paul Workforce Innovation Network and Heading Home Minnesota funder collaboratives. She holds a B.A. in sociology from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
