The College of Science and Engineering is searching for a Director of Annual Giving. This is tremendous opportunity to join a seasoned and high-performing development team. The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Minnesota (U of M) is one of the premiere educational and research institutions in the world. The college offers a wide range of degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. Comprised of 12 departments and 24 research centers encompassing engineering, the physical sciences, and mathematics, the academic programs of CSE are consistently ranked among the best in the nation. CSE is the second largest college at the U of M with more than 5,500 undergraduates, 2,750 graduate students and 430 tenured faculty members. The college attracts the most talented students at the U of M, with an average ACT score of nearly 32.

CSE alumni have founded more than 4,000 active companies worldwide, employing 551,000 and generating annual revenues of over $90 billion. The nine person CSE development team raises an average of $30 million annually in support of the college from its nearly 70,000 alumni, friends, and industry partners. The college launched a $150 million comprehensive campaign, which concluded in June 2015 (a year early) and raised over $176 million. The college is currently in the midst of a second campaign with a $250 million goal and has raised $204 million to date.

The Position:

The Director of Annual Giving develops the strategy and key messages, plans, executes and monitors the annual giving program for the College of Science and Engineering to assure a vibrant and growing collegiate annual giving program. This position also supports the stewardship reporting efforts of the college.

Responsibilities:
Annual Giving Oversight and Strategy Development (70%)

Create and implement a comprehensive strategy for CSE annual giving in line with the College’s strategic plan, with a strong focus towards donor acquisition and continued and increased giving.

Monitor and analyze reports to ensure the annual giving program is on track to meet stated goals and adjusts strategy as necessary to meet stated objectives.

Create annual plans containing objectives, time lines, deliverables and outcomes with an eye to cultivate and engage leadership annual gifts.

Closely collaborates with departments and centers to ensure consistency of key messages and timelines throughout all communications.

Develop strategies and key messages to secure and renew annual gifts of $1,000+.

Collaborates with the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) on direct mail, phone solicitations and electronic media strategies that position the college with its constituents and leads to annual support.

Evaluates potential for special or segmented mailings and implements as appropriate.

Creates written pieces for cultivation, solicitation and acknowledgement purposes.

Develops up-to-date information about the College of Science and Engineering and each department for UMF telemarketers.

Manages the Deans Club, the College’s leadership club for annual donors and recruits new members. This includes identifying prospective members, soliciting their annual support and managing the benefits that come with membership.

Identifies annual giving donors who are potential major and planned gift donors and works with collegiate development officers to identify and implement strategies to engage them and move them to the next level of interest and involvement.

Remains up-to-date on annual fundraising strategies and tools in all appropriate communications channels. Makes recommendations for program improvements to the Sr. Director of External Relations.

Develops, in collaboration with the Director of Stewardship, a plan for appropriately stewarding annual giving donors.

Manages a small portfolio (20 – 25) of leadership annual giving donors.

Stewardship Reporting (30%)

Interview endowed scholarship/fellowship/chair recipients and create (write and/or film and edit) approximately 50 donor stewardship impact reports in various formats, including video and printed reports in order to illustrate the impact of a donor’s giving on the college.

Recruit students to attend specific events to meet with their benefactors, including annual Leadership event and smaller stewardship events.

Assist in coordination of personalized acknowledgement letters for the college’s leadership donors.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field

Three years of experience in annual giving, development operations, stewardship reporting or related field

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Google applications (calendar, email, etc.)

Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to analyze data and make decisions based on that analysis

Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently and productively under pressure

Flexibility and initiative in managing change

Proven ability to work with volunteers, donors, and vendors

Demonstrated problem solving and research skills, with proven critical thinking ability

Excellent customer service skills

Commitment to quality and high performance standards

Ability to handle sensitive materials in a confidential manner and to maintain data integrity

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in annual giving in a university or other complex organization

Experience in development writing, specifically solicitation letters

Specific knowledge of the University of Minnesota Donor Management System (DMS) or other development tracking/gift accounting software

Knowledge of Adobe Premiere
