The University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) operates as a separate nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of supporting the University. UMF is responsible for raising and managing private gifts to the University.

Overview
This position is responsible for securing significant philanthropic support for the University of Minnesota, with particular emphasis on clinical and medical center-wide related initiatives and priorities in the Medical School and the Academic Health Center. This individual is responsible to cultivate and solicit major gifts to support education, research, clinical care, and priority capital needs with major gift prospects primarily being individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses.

Responsibilities

Major Gifts
•    Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors with a specific focus on major gift prospects in priority projects within ophthalmology, ENT and Neuroscience.
•    Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics.
•    Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the medical school assigned areas and philanthropic priorities to effectively and compellingly present its case to prospects and donors.
•    Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 150 major gifts ($50,000 and above) prospects. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts.
•    Manage and lead specific fundraising projects pertaining to areas of focus.
•    Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate UMF Foundation procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution.
•    Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and other Foundation staff on donor strategies.
•    Work with University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) development research to continue to identify new potential major gift prospects for future gift opportunities.
•    Initiate and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives within the assigned areas.

Volunteer Management
•    Recruit, organize, train and work with volunteers as needed in support of fundraising and closely related activities.
•    As needed, work with and oversee the activities of volunteer committees working on behalf of the assigned areas.
Organizational
•    Complete, file and maintain accurate, relevant and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals.
•    Attend University and external functions as recommended.
•    Serve on committees as appropriate.
•    Prepare reports and other required information as requested.
•    Accept and implement other specific assignments as directed.
•    This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various University and external functions and occasional travel.

Qualifications

Required
•    Bachelor’s degree and three years’ demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
•    Professional demeanor with proven track record with progressively increasing levels of responsibility.
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities
•    Demonstrated success in working independently but also collaboratively in a team setting
•    Demonstrated success in building solid relationship with a diverse constituency.
•    Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead people and to work collaboratively.
•    Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective presentation skills.
•    Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and current technology
•    Ability to maintain confidential information; knowledge of healthcare regulations helpful.

Preferred
•    Advanced degree.
•    Development experience, including capital campaign experience, in higher education, health, or disease-related institution.
•    Knowledge of planned giving programs.
•    Knowledge of healthcare regulations.
•    Strong commitment to a major, land grant/research university in an urban environment.
•    Experience managing and coordinating volunteers.

Office environment including standing and sitting at desk, use of computer, occasional lifting of approximately 10#.
