Simpson Housing Services began as an emergency overnight shelter in the basement of Simpson United Methodist Church in 1982. Simpson has since become a leading nonprofit providing assistance to people experiencing homelessness. In response to un-met community needs, our programs have grown to include emergency shelter, single adult supportive housing, and family supportive housing. We work across the metro area, partnering with landlords and developers to find affordable housing for all families and individuals. At any given time, we provide supportive services to 100 individuals and 200 families with over 400 children.

How Can You Contribute?

As a Development and Grants Manager at Simpson Housing Services, you will play a key role in supporting private fundraising and public grants & contracts. This position is primarily responsible for institutional giving from foundations, corporate, and government sources. The Development and Grants Manager is responsible for managing the public and private grants calendar, submitting proposals, writing reports, and identifying new funding opportunities. This position will lead efforts to expand and deepen relationships with institutional giving sources, including but not limited to foundations, businesses, individuals, and faith organizations.

The Development and Grants Manager will work closely with the Director of Development and Communications to develop strategies and messaging for fundraising campaigns and communication initiatives. The Development and Grants Manager will be part of a fundraising team and will help in all areas of the annual fund development, communication plan, and community engagement.

Ideal candidate is interested in expanding their fundraising and non-profit experience.

Responsibilities

Private Fundraising:

Expand and manage a well-established institutional giving program, coordinate and manage a portfolio of foundation and corporate relationships.
Maintain relationships with current core supporters and build a pipeline of new supporters of foundations, corporate, government, businesses and faith organizations.
Collaborate with the Director of Development and Communications on sponsorship opportunities with funders, individuals and businesses.
Build and deepen relationships with assigned institutional and individuals donors and work with the development and volunteer team for new funding and community engagement opportunities, including but not limited to: sponsorship, volunteering, and speaking engagements.
Manage private grant calendar and timeline that complies with annual fund, programs, and strategic plan.
Prepare and submit all proposals, reports, and grant applications.
Coordinate foundation/funder meetings and site visits.
Maintain excellent historical records with files on the server and in Raiser’s Edge.
Works with staff to ensure each project or program is meeting proposal conditions and expectations.
Research and solicit new sources of private funding.
Develop timely acknowledgment letters and process any necessary documentation to allow receipt of funding.

Public Fundraising:

The Development and Grants Manager will work with Director of Programs and assigned program staff on all public funding grants, contracts, and proposals. Duties include:

Manage public funding contracts and proposals;
Coordinate renewal proposals for existing funding;
Research and solicit new sources of public funds;
Write follow-up and mid-year grant reports;
Attend community meetings as requested; and
Track public funding contracts for renewal, reporting, and compliance.

Special Projects:

The Development and Grants Manager will work closely with the Director of Development and Communications to develop strategies and messaging for fundraising campaigns and communication initiatives. The Development and Grants Manager will be part of a development/volunteer team and will be assigned special projects. This includes, but is not limited to:

Write content for fundraising appeals and marketing channels (print, website, and social media).
Conduct interviews with clients, staff, volunteers and stakeholders.
Assist with editing, proofreading, and fact checking for agency external communications.
Provide support for fundraising and cultivation events, including corporate sponsorship, logistical event/meeting assistance, and day-of staffing.
Collaborate with staff to create a strategy to engage the community on a broader level.
Identify funders to engage in volunteer opportunities to deepen relationships.

Additional Duties:

Maintain accurate records, including employee time sheets and travel.
Ensure accuracy, completeness and confidentiality of records.
Provide other administrative support as requested.
Complete other duties as assigned; this may include various time-limited projects.
Provide positive representation of SHS through public relations and networking:

Attend and participate in professional meetings and workshops such as: funder, government, community meetings, and site visits as requested.
Interpret the agency to constituents; speak to community organizations or groups regarding SHS and its programs.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
Participate in All Staff meetings.
Attend other internal and external meetings as assigned.

Possess superior computer skills, with experience in Office 365, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
Demonstrate ability to learn additional computer skills/program as necessary.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to represent agency decisions constructively.
Ability to promote a professional work environment that is affirming, respectful and understanding of diverse people.
Adhere to a standard framework of boundaries in all interactions with guests, volunteers, staff and public.


Scope of Position

This position will play a key fundraising role in leading efforts to expand and deepen relationships with institutional giving sources, including but not limited to: foundations, businesses, individuals, and faith organizations. This position will be part of the private and public fundraising team and will work closely with the Director of Development and Communications, Director of Volunteer Engagement, Volunteer Engagement and Partnerships Manager, Director of Programs, Director of Business Operations, and Executive Director in the management of private grant awards, public contracts, and cultivating relationships with funders. This is a 40 hour per week position. Occasional evenings and weekends are required.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge and skills.
2 to 4 years of experience as a grant writer in corporate and foundation fundraising with a proven track record of successful proposals and working relationships with funders.
1 to 3 years successful government grant writing experience.
Must have good organizational abilities and understanding of homelessness.
Employee must be able to produce letters and reports of professional quality.
Fundraising database management experience; Raiser’s Edge a plus.
Solid research skills using commercial and publicly available foundation databases.
Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are required.

Desired:

Ideal candidate is interested in expanding their fundraising experience.
Fundraising and/or Sales experience is preferred.
Experience in working in a non-profit organization.

Essential Mental Functions:

The employee must draw on the ability to empathize, problem solve, and the ability to accept people unconditionally with an openness to new ideas.

To interpret policies and guidelines, the employee must draw on analytical abilities.

When faced with situations where policies and procedures do not apply, the employee must determine the appropriate action based on experience and judgment in consultation with the Executive Director.

The employee must understand and apply knowledge of homelessness and social support systems. The employee must be able to communicate the housing programs to potential funders.

Essential Physical Functions:

The employee must be able to hear and speak, in order to communicate with stakeholders on the telephone and in writing. The employee must be able to move about the office location and lift up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

Percentage time spent away from main office/location:
Time inside: 60%, Time outside: 40%, Agency travel time required: 5%
Travel includes travel within the community including but not limited to community meetings.

Percentage time spent in direct care: 0%

Type of guidance and supervision received: Will participate in regular supervision meetings as requested.

Number of In-direct Reports: May provide volunteer/intern supervision

Budget Responsibility: Will provide direct input to the budget development process working with the Executive Director and Director of Business Operations.
