Born in Brooklyn, New York, Katherine B. Andersen graduated from Sweet Briar College with a chemistry degree in 1926 and earned a Master’s of Science from New York University in 1933. Kitty worked in a research lab for the New York City Department of Health before marrying Fred C. Andersen and moving to Bayport in 1941. At a time when women serving on Corporate Boards was a rarity, Mrs. Andersen was elected to the Andersen Corporation Board of Directors, serving for 50 years until her retirement January 1993. Mrs. Andersen was a well-known philanthropist and community leader, supporting many youth and senior programs and organizations throughout Bayport and the St. Croix Valley.

Kitty and Fred were instrumental in establishing three of the five philanthropic Andersen-Related Foundations that collectively donate $30 million annually to nonprofit organizations throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and areas of the United States. They founded the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation in 1959. Kitty served on this board until her death August 21, 1996. Contributions from Kitty during her lifetime and through bequests established and added to the Katherine B. Andersen Fund of The Saint Paul Foundation which supports the projects that Kitty funded during her life, including youth and elderly programs. Kitty also served as a founding board member of the Andersen Corporate Foundation, incorporated in 1941 as the Bayport Foundation.

An active volunteer for many organizations, she is credited with starting and recruiting donors for the first Bloodmobile for the American Red Cross St. Croix Valley Chapter, hosting picnics for senior citizens at her home, and helping bring the Courage Center to the St. Croix Valley. Mrs. Andersen was a founding board member of Family Service of the St. Croix Area (now FamilyMeans) and a strong supporter of Boy and Girl Scouts.
